How to Count Words and Characters

The Word & Character Counter gives you an instant breakdown of your text — word count, character count, line count, paragraph count, and estimated reading time.

  1. Type or paste your text into the input area.
  2. View the live stats panel: words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, and lines update in real time.
  3. Check estimated reading time based on an average reading speed of 200–250 words per minute.

How Word Count Works

Words are counted by splitting text on whitespace boundaries and filtering empty tokens. Character count includes every UTF-16 code unit. Sentences are detected by punctuation boundaries (period, question mark, exclamation mark). Reading time divides the word count by 238 wpm — the average adult silent reading speed according to research by Brysbaert (2019).
